Kilmainham Gaol

Kilmainham Gaol is one of Europe's largest unoccupied gaols and is a must on your visit to Dublin. The Gaol opened in 1796 and is where the main rebellious leaders of the Irish Revolution were incarcerated. Former Taoiseach and President of Ireland, Eammon de Valera was the last remaining prisoner, being released when the Gaol closed in 1924. In the Gaol there is a major exhibition that details the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration. You can partake in a guided tour with an audio-visual show, demonstrating how Ireland became an independent nation. Travel by LUAS to Kilmainham in just 30 minutes.
